Last Thursday’s heavy rain caused damage to not only streets and homes in the community, but also caused irreversible damage to a local DJ’s sound system.

Local citizen John Watson does sound for many local events including National Night Out and the Picnic in the Park events during the summer. Thursday evening, unfortunately, caused damage to his sound equipment.

“Thursday evening, we had that bad storm that came through, and we were at Arkalon,” Watson’s partner Jamie Carlile said. “We came back home Friday, went to his mom’s place, and it was flooded. We had parked a little ways back and walked up, and John’s DJ van was flooded, and we were both thinking ‘Oh no!’ because all of his sound system stuff was in there. They pushed it up to the old Garfield building so we could get in it, and all this water came pouring out after he opened the door. His stuff had been in the water for 14 hours. Pretty much everything got ruined, but there are some pieces that are still working, only we don’t know for how long.”

Upon seeing what had happened, it was a storm of emotions for both, Carlile said.

“From what I was seeing, I was just thinking ‘This is not good.’ John was hurt, he was upset and I was trying to help calm him down,” Carlile said. “We just couldn’t believe that had happened and while we were at Arkalon, John had even thought about calling his mom and asking her to get the van in a safer spot, but he decided not to because he didn’t want to wake her up in the middle of the night.”

As Watson still does DJ work and sound work around the community, the equipment will need to be replaced and Carlile said there is a small fundraising effort going on to help with that task. There is a fund set up at Golden Plains Credit Union, and when people go in to make a donation, they will need to request said donation go to the Watson Warrior Fund, and that will go to an account to help us get the money needed to replace the equipment, Carlile said. She and Watson will be putting jars out throughout town later this week and will be talking to some businesses. And if people want to send their donations to Watson directly, they can give him a call at 620-370-1499 and get the mailing address.

“We’ll try to get as much as we can, but with the way John’s priced everything for what we need, it’s nearly $950. But as soon as we get enough money for what we lost, we’ll shut the fund down for Watson Warriors,” Carlile said. “The people or places who donate, he’ll give them one DJ job for free or one sound job for free as a way to say thank you for helping. John had talked to Earl (Watt) here at the paper first, and then he’d talked to Joe Denoyer. Then there were calls made to the Recreation Center, the Chamber of Commerce, Rex Petty with Faith Tabernacle Church, and Joe told us if we got the prices for everything we’re looking to replace, he’ll put it on his Facebook about what all we’re doing. I think the big thing is John still wanted to do sound stuff and still wanted to do DJ stuff.”

Overall, Watson and Carlile said they appreciate any support that is given toward the replacement of Watson’s sound equipment.

“I just want to say thanks for helping out and thanks in advance to anyone who donates,” Carlile said.
