In Loving Memory
David Gene Miller, age 87, passed away peacefully at home on January 6, 2013.
David was born July 14, 1925 in Farmington Township, the son of the late Emil and Mabel (Wanke) Miller. He attended rural Farmhill School in Farmington Township. In May of 1945, he was drafted and served in the 347th Harbor Craft stationed in Yokohama, Japan. After his discharge from the army in 1946, David returned to the family farm. In 1952, he married Helen Prigge at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester, Minnesota.
David was a dairy farmer who understood the need for farming practices that protected the quality of our water and farmlands. He exercised his belief in stewardship as a farmer and by serving on the Olmsted County Soil and Conservation Board. David was an avid reader whose interest in learning and education led him to serve on the School Board for District 1348.
David was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Potsdam, MN where he served in various offices. He enjoyed talking about the history and mechanics of tractors. After retiring, he spent much of his time collecting and restoring old tractors. He was honored for his military service by being chosen to take an Honor Flight in 2011 to visit the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.
Survivors include his wife, son Ed (Becci) Miller of Rochester, MN, daughters Kathy Sukalski (Tom Johnson) of Grand Forks, ND, Linda Miller of Liberal KS, and Janet (Alan) Leisen of Plainview, MN, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sister Marion (Norman) Hoffman of Elgin, MN, and sister-in-law Adeline Miller of Rochester, MN. David was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gerald, and infant sister Loraine.
o In accordance with his belief that knowledge and education are of upmost importance, David’s family honored his wish that his body be donated to medical science after his passing. Visitation will be at the Schleicher Funeral Home in Plainview, Minnesota from 4-7 PM on Friday, January 11 and at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Potsdam, MN one hour before the memorial service. The memorial service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Potsdam at 11 AM on Saturday, January 12. Burial will occur at a later date at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be given to an organization of the donor’s choice.
