After falling behind in the first half, the Tyrone Bobcats climbed back into the game in the third, but could not catch the Texhoma Red Devils, losing 69-58.

Tyrone started the second half trailing by 10 points, 36-26. The Bobcats outscored Texhoma 17-12 in the third to cut the lead to just five (48-43) heading into the fourth.

The Red Devils proved to be too much with a 21-15 advantage in the fourth to hold off the Bobcats.

Texhoma had started the game strong at the offensive end and led 20-14 after one quarter of play. A 16-12 advantage for Texhoma in the second made the spread 10 at half.

Austin Olivas had a game-high 21 points for the Bobcats; Payson Slater dropped in 19, and Chantz Reece added 8.

Tyrone (16-2) took on Turpin (7-11), who lost to Hooker 57-36 in their semi-final, Saturday evening for third place.

Tyrone 50, Hardesty 44

The Tyrone Lady Bobcats advanced to the consolation game with a 50-44 win over the Hardesty Lady Bison at the Texhoma Tournament.

Rayna Wall and Tori Dumler combined for 32 of the Lady Bobcats 50 points. Wall scored 17 and hit three shots from beyond the arc. Dumler hit one three and tallied 15 points.

Tyrone led 15-9 early, but Hardesty came back in the second quarter with an 11-7 advantage to cut the Lady Bobcats lead to just two by halftime, 22-20.

“They were able to take advantage of some of our turnovers to get a lot of their points,” Lady Bobcats coach Hope Cox said.

Tyrone took back control of the game in the third, outscoring Hardesty 18-14 to take a 40-34 lead into the fourth quarter. Wall and Dumler were huge in the third quarter, scoring 16 (Wall 10, Dumler 6) of the team’s 18 points.

Tyrone held the Lady Bison to just six in the fourth, and scored 10 to win by 10.

“Offensively, we did a good job of cutting and we were able to get a lot of layups that way,” Cox said. “We switched to a 1-3-1 defense and we seemed to do a better job communicating.”

Tyrone (7-11) faced Goodwell Saturday in the consolation game.

Goodwell 49, Turpin 37 (girls)

It only took one bad quarter. The Turpin Lady Cardinals were two points better than the Goodwell Lady Eagles for three quarters, but a bad second quarter doomed their hopes for a win, falling 49-37 to the Lady Eagles.

“We did not play well,” Lady Cardinals Coach Jeff Funk said. “We allowed them way too many second-chance points.”

Goodwell scored 14 points on points that came after an offensive rebound. Helping Goodwell’s cause on the boards was the fact that Turpin’s best rebounders, Trista Watson and Ashi Funk spent much of the game on the bench because of foul trouble

After a 9-9 first quarter, Goodwell exploded in the second quarter, outscoring Turpin 21-7 to take a 30-16 lead at half.

Turpin cut into the Lady Eagles’ lead by two in the third, but missed a big opportunity to cut it even more.

“We were able to get their best player in foul trouble in the third, but could not take advantage of it,” Funk said.

Turpin pushed to cut into Goodwell’s lead, but could not make a dent, losing by 12.

Raegan Alvarez scored 18 for the Lady Cardinals, and Maylinh Cruz added 7.

Turpin (2-16) matched up with Hardesty, who lost to Tyrone 50-44, Saturday morning.
