While Liberal’s seniors were recognized Thursday, the Redskin wrestlers gave them something to remember, earning a 33-29 win over the Red Demons that came down to the final match of the night.
The Redskins fell behind early with an open weight at 106 pounds, but Oscar Garcia gave the Redskins three team points in the 113-pound weight class with a 10-4 win over Dodge City’s Howard Johnson.
Kyler Thompson was pinned at the 120-pound division, and Dodge City took a 12-3 lead.
Greg McClurg lost a 7-5 decision to Dodge’s Jaquan Graves in the 126-pound division, but Cody Smith cut the Red Demon lead to 15-9 with a pin over David Forester in the 132-pound weight class.
Liberal tied the dual in the 138-pound division when Corey Campos pinned Aaron Serna in the second round.
Dodge recaptured the lead when Dane Edwards earned a 12-0 decision over Ayodale Braimah in the 145-pound weight class.
Senior Trenton Wilson narrowed Dodge City’s lead to one after earning a 6-0 decision over Nick Killian in the 152-pound weight class.
Dodge jumped back to a 23-18 lead when Jhett Ostrom earned a 9-1 victory over Liberal’s Beau Fick in the 160-pound division.
Dodge expanded its lead to eight when Santiago Garcia earned a 10-3 win over Liberal’s Edgar Sandoval in the 170-pound weight class.
The Red Demons jumped out to their biggest lead when Gideon Wells scored a 7-2 win over Shawn Ley in the 182-pound division.
Trailing 29-18 with only three matches to go, the Redskins needed to sweep the heavier weights to win, and that’s what they did.
Ryan McClurg earned a critical reversal in the second period to preserve a 4-1 win over Dodges Connor Kinkelaar.
Jorge Nunez pinned Christian Torres, and that brought the Redskins within two points, 29-27.
Sergio Borjas only needed 40 seconds to pin Dodge City’s Max Trent, and the six team points gave the Redskins their first and only lead, 33-29, in the final match of the dual.
