ULYSSES – Charles Ernest Battin, 93, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born June 16, 1916, to Charles L. and Blanche (Frazee) Battin in Hopewell.
He married Helen Bell Oct. 12, 1938, in Garden City. She preceded him in death.
He graduated from Macksville High School in 1934. He attended Garden City Junior College where he played football and basketball.
He was a farmer.
He served on the Grant County Extension Council and served his church for many years as deacon and adult Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include one son, John Battin and wife, Gloria, Ulysses; two daughters, Joan Smith, Liberal, and Jari Lynne Sims and husband, James, Manitou Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and one daughter-in-law, Janice Battin, Ulysses.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one son Charles, two brothers, Merritt and John, and one half sister, Enid Doggett.
o Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Grace Baptist Church in Ulysses with Pastor Gary Gregory presiding.
Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.
