With only one senior on the team, the Liberal Lady Redskins have struggled to earn wins.

Saturday was no different.

The Lady Redskins battled with Great Bend for a quarter and a half before the Lady Panthers were abel to reach a double digit lead and sail past Liberal, 61-39.

Liberal started freshman Brittany Granger while freshman Megan Larkin and sophomores Kelly Ramirez and Jasmine Hernandez saw significant playing time.

Liberal still depended on junior Jai Chapman for points as well as senior Marisol Regalado in the paint, but the full court press from the Lady Panthers led to too many Lady Redskin turnovers in the loss.

“The difference in the game is turnovers,” Liberal coach Bill Baird said. “When you give the ball away enough you can’t be successful.”

Cached was impressed with junior Stehanie Sanchez who has been getting more playing time as her performance on the court improves.

“Stephanie Sanchez played real hard basketball,” Baird said. “She is earning her way.”

But missed passes and the inability to find the open player has continued to be a problem for the Lady Redskins.

“I can’t point a finger because everyone had their trouble catching,  seeing the floor, not putting the ball down on the floor,” Baird said.

While the score may not have appeared to be an indication of improvement, the signs were there.

Liberal was running the offense and putting the ball in a position of threat. While the shots may not have gone down, the Lady redskins are taking more of them. In some games this year, Liberal was limited to three shot attempts in a quarter.

The Lady Redskins will not be playing with Megan Besecker the rest of the season due to illness, and they are still trying to find a way to score when Chapman is being double teamed every game.

“We are improving slowly,” Baird said. “We just don’t have that guard. We miss Megan Besecker. She saw Marisol the best and handled the ball and could hit the outside shot. They are double-teaming Jai. We tried working in practice on a double team with Jai, but you can’t simulate that intensity.”

Liberal (4-14, 0-6) will travel to Garden City Tuesday to face the Lady Buffaloes (16-3, 7-0) at the new Garden City High School.
