Forgan boys’ head basketball coach Todd Kerr was recently named the Oklahoma state coach of the year by the National Federation of State High School Associations for the 2011-12 school year.

“The award looks not only at won/loss record, but also involvement with other school and community activities, and coaching philosophy,” a release from the NFHS states.

“I’m honored and humbled to have been selected,” Todd Kerr said. “I also smart enough to understand that when you are selected for an award like that, you’ve got really good players.”

Kerr directed the Bulldogs to a second-straight Class B state title and a 29-1 record. Forgan collected an impressive regular season resume, including wins over eventual 5A state champion Bishop McGuinness, Class A state champion Cheyenne, and others; their only loss coming at the hands of the eventual 6A state champion, Tulsa Union.

The ‘11-’12 Forgan team blitzed through the district, regional and area playoff rounds with an astounding 53-point margin of victory. The Bulldogs continued their dominance at the state tournament, winning their three games by an average of 32 points, capped by a 34-point win, one point shy of the state record for margin of victory, over Arnett in the finals.

“As we move on and get away from it a little bit and the years pile up on us, we’ll have a better understanding of just how good they were,” Kerr said. “I know they’ve been mentioned as one of the best in the history of Class B basketball in the state of Okllahoma, which is quite incredible to be put that sentence. I won’t get into that debate but I do know they were really good, and really fun to be around.”
