Rachel Barnes continued to make her case as the best player in the Jayhawk Conference and perhaps one of the top five in the nation Friday by scoring 20 points and grabbing six rebounds in a 60-55 Lady Saints win Friday in the first round of the Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville.
But Cowley didn’t make it easy. The Lady Tigers, led by Gianna Woods’ 15 points and 12 rebounds, tried to erase a nine-point halftime deficit and was able to win the second half by four points.
The Lady Saints won despite only connecting on 25 percent of their shots while allowing Cowley to hit 40 percent.
But it was the defensive pressure, turnovers and free throws that helped the Lady Saints. Seward forced 20 Cowley turnovers, and the Lady Saints connected on 22 of 24 seocn-half free throws.
The win advanced Seward’s record to 14-1 overall, 2-0 in the Jayhawk West.
Seward faced Coffeyville Saturday to wrap up the Jayhawk Shootout and will return to East action at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Pratt
