A slow start proved to be too much for the Redskins to overcome Friday at Hays.
Liberal fell behind the strong shooting Indians, and by the time the Redskins started to rally, the hole was just too deep in a 56-48 loss.
Hays jumped out to a 17-11 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 33-21 by halftime.
The Redskins won the second half, outscoring the Indians by four, but it was not enough to earn a win in the Western Athletic Conference opener.
Jade Cathey led the charge for the Redskins with 19 points, and Tyson Deaton turned in a 17-point performance.
Kedrick Eyle scored six, Justin Andrade had three, Bryce Johnson scored two, and Bryan Morris added one.
Liberal (3-2, 0-1) will travel to Garden City Tuesday to face the Buffaloes in a WAC contest.
