The Redskins are off to a slow start to the 2013 season after dropping a game Tuesday to Class 4A Hugoton, 10-4.

The major damage came late when Hugoton broke a 4-2 game wide open by scoring six runs in the top of the seventh.

The Redskins scored two in the bottom half of the inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Hugoton took a lead in the top of the second inning with a two-run home run by Reid Davis.

The Eagles added another run in the top of the third, and the Redskins continued to struggle at the plate.

Hugoton added another run in the top of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead, but a two-run double from Law Greiner allowed the Redskins to cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the sixth inning.

Liberal had a chance for more, but Stevie Lira struck out to end the inning with Liberal only trailing 4-2.

That’s when the Eagles put the game away.

A passed ball allowed the six-run Hugoton inning to start when Henry Vela crossed the plate, and a Nic Frederick single scored Michael Baeza and Slade Shuck.

Hugoton added three more runs to take a 10-2 lead.

The Redskins added two runs in the bottom half of the seventh, and the Redskins fell to 0-2 on the season with a 10-4 loss. Liberal only managed three hits while the Eagles belted out 17.

In junior varsity action, the Redskins were able to score a 13-2 win over Hugoton. Liberal had 12 hits in the win.  Kaiden Long led the junior varsity squad with an inside the park home run.
