In a key Region VI dual match Tuesday afternoon at the campus tennis courts the 12th ranked Seward County Saints took down the Barton Cougars 7-2 to pick up their fourth win of the 2013 season. Seward swept doubles and won five of seven singles matches to cruise to the 7-2 win.
The Saints started up 1-0 after a default win in No. 3 doubles and quickly picked up their second win of the dual as Donnersson Penna and Daniel Alonte blanked Jeret Johnson and Brian Shauf 8-0 in No. 2 doubles to go up 2-0.
The No. 1 doubles match was a dandy as the Saints Justin Pena and Luke Robertson battled it out against the Cougars Samuel Araujo and Rafael Sequeira. The Cougars top duo took an early lead in the set, but Pena and Robertson battled back to force a 17th game tiebreaker which they won 7-3 to put Seward up 3-0.
Again the Saints were dealt a win in No. 4 singles where the Cougars defaulted and sophomore Josh Hamilton sealed the match for the guys in green with a 6-1, 6-2 win in No. 5 singles over Kyle Corbett to give the Saints the clinching fifth victory to take a 5-0 lead.
Pena gave the Saints a 6-0 lead, downing Araujo 6-4, 6-3 in a good No. 1 singles match.
Barton got their first win of the day in No. 2 singles as Sequeira took down Penna 6-4, 6-7, 10-6 in a marathon match and the Cougars earned another third set tiebreak win in No. 6 singles as Schauf downed Adrian Amado in his first match as a Saint 6-4, 0-6, 10-8 to make it 6-2. The final match to finish was in No. 3 singles where Alonte and Johnson battled it out with Alonte using a big serve to come away with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to give the Saints a 7-2 win on the day.
Seward improves to 4-3 overall on the season with the win while Barton remains winless at 0-3. The Saints will be back on the court Thursday where they will travel to Arkansas City to battle Southwest Christian on Thursday followed by a showdown with No. 6 Cowley Friday.
