To put it mildly, it wasn’t exactly pristine conditions outside as the Seward County Lady Saints put their No. 10 national ranking on the line Tuesday in a Region VI dual against rival Barton at Blue Bonnet Park in Liberal.

With a 30-mile-per-hour wind howling, the Lady Saints willed their way back from a 3-1 deficit to win four of the final five matches to knock off the Lady Cougars 5-4 in their lone home date of the season.

Things didn’t start well for the Lady Saints in doubles as they fell 8-5 in No. 3 doubles and 8-6 in No. 1 doubles to quickly fall behind 2-0.

In No. 2 doubles Kathryn Roohan and Leticia Monteiro of Seward trailed 4-3 before coming from behind to win 9-7 against Darrien Beckwith and Aspen McCann to give the Lady Saints their first point of the day.

It was Barton picking up their first singles point of the day as their top gun Karina Ono defeated Seward’s Anna Braun 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles to put the Lady Cougars on top 3-1.

The Lady Saints quickly answered in No. 4 singles where Monteiro cut McCann down to size 6-0, 6-1 to draw Seward to within one at 3-2 and Roohan tied the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win in No. 5 singles over Jamie Christiansen to draw the two teams even at 3.

The teams traded points at No. 3 and No. 6 singles as the Lady Saints Kurstie Zepeda downed Beckwith 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot while Barton took the No. 6 point as Gentry McLeland beat the Lady Saints Whitney Garinger in her opening match with Seward by matching 6-3 scored to once again tie the match at 4-4.

That brought all the eyes upon court two where Seward’s Katiuska Adarmes and Barton’s Michelle Miller squared off with the meet on the line.  Adarmes took the first set 6-3 and led the second 3-2 when she flipped on the lightswitch and won three of the final four games to seal away win 6-3 to give the Lady Saints the 5-4 dual victory.

The Lady Saints improve to 2-3 on the year with the nailbiting victory while Barton drops to an even .500 at 2-2 on the year with the loss.  Friday Seward will be asked to elevate their game as they travel to Arkansas City to battle a pair of top 10 teams when they take on the Region VI favorite Cowley Lady Tigers at 9 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. date with No. 5 Seminole State.
