The Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs softball team slipped to 0-4 on the season with two losses to the Elkhart Lady Wildcats, 16-11 and 18-4.
“Lexi Stark pitched well in the first game, we just had too many errors,” Lady Mustangs coach J.R. Mendoza said. “We missed having Rachel Amerin, but Ericka Nevarez continued hitting well.”
Errors were the difference in Game 1. Heights and Elkhart were even with 10 hits apiece, but the Lady Mustangs struggled to field and committed nine errors to just one for the Lady Wildcats.
With a five-run second inning, Heights went up 6-1. But Elkhart swallowed up that lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring 10 runs to go up 11-6. Three more in the third made the score 14-6.
With Elkhart leading 16-7 after six, Heights rallied for four runs but fell short of a comeback.
In Game 2, Elkhart wasted no time, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first. Heights tried to answer with 3 in the top of the second, but the Lady Wildcats kept pouring on the runs, and ending the game by run rule in the fourth.
Ericka Nevarez was the Lady Mustangs top hitter, going 4-7 with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored. Lexi Stark was 3-6 with a walk and four RBI.
The Lady Mustangs were scheduled to host Lakin today, but because of weather concerns it has been rescheduled for April 22nd. Heights’ next games will be at Scott City April 9th.
