The Lady Redskin soccer program is on the rise in 2013.
After two difficult seasons of being shut out in the Western Athletic Conference, Liberal won its first WAC game of the year on the road against Great Bend, 3-0.
The Lady Redskins knocked off the Lady Panthers at the Titan Classic over the weekend, but Tuesday’s game counted in the WAC standings.
The Lady Redskins were lead by sophomore midfielder Kelly Ramirez who scored all three goals for the hat trick.
Ramirez scored the first goal after receiving a cross pass from freshman Jasmine Chacon.
Liberal jumped out to a 2-goal lead in the first half when Ramirez split the hands of the Great Bend goalkeeper with 15:30 to play in the first half.
The Lady Redskins continued to prevent Great Bend form any scoring opportunities in the second half, and with 5:28 remaining in the game, Chacon made another pass to Ramirez who found the net for her third goal.
Chacon led the team with six shots on goal and three assists.
The Lady Redskins continued to provide offensive pressure with 15 shots on goal.
Junior Magali Vazquez was able to record three saves on goal.
The Lady Redskins have jumped out to a 3-2 start to the season and will travel to Hays Thursday for a 1 p.m. game with the Lady Indians. Hays is off to a 4-1 start and is also 1-0 in the WAC with a 3-1 win over Dodge City.
The junior varsity also earned a WAC win Tuesday by knocking off Great Bend 2-1.
Marilyn Guzman scored both goals.
