After digging a 10-point hole in the first half, the Liberal Redskins sallied to force overtime on the road Tuesday against the Garden City Buffaloes.

But the tank ran out in the extra period, and the Buffaloes were able to hold off the Redskins 57-55 to drop Liberal to 0-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Jade Cathey scored six of his 16 points in the first quarter to keep the game close early. Garden Had a one-point lead heading in to the second quarter, when Liberal struggled to shoot.

The Redskins made only one basket from the field and made six of 10 free throws while the Buffaloes racked up 17 points in the quarter to take a 28-18 halftime lead.

But the Redskins rallied.

Cathey, Kedrick Eyle and Justin Andrade each scored four points in the third, and Tyson Deaton and Bryce Johnson each scored a basket while the defense limited the Buffaloes to 10 points, nine of which came from Garden City’s Phillip Garcia. By the end of the third, the Redskins cut the Buffalo lead to 38-34.

And the rally continued in the fourth when Kowan Russell took control inside and scored seven of Liberal’s 15 points in the period to force a 49-49 tie.

But the Buffaloes were able to stop the bleeding in overtime and won the basket trade 8-6 for a 57-55 win.

Russell scored nine points to support Cathey’s 16. All of Russell's points came in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Three Redskins, Bryce Johnson, Deaton and Eyle, each scored six.

The Redskins will return to the Big House Friday to host Maize South.
