Of all times to hit a scoring drought, the fourth quarter of a conference game would not be the best time.
But that’s what happened to the Lady Redskins Tuesday the led to a 51-42 loss against Garden City.
Liberal’s leading scorer, Justice Norah was shut down in the fourth quarter despite scoring 21 points in the game.
Liberal’s Kirsten Ross hit Liberal’s only basket in the fourth quarter, and Malyssa Williams hit two of six free throw attempts. Kayla Payton also hit one of two free throws in the fourth for Liberal’s five points.
While Liberal struggled late, the Lady Buffaloes were abel to score baskets or get to the line. Garden City outscored the Lady Redskins 14-5 in the final period to earn the 51-42 win.
The Lady Buffaloes were able to outpace the Lady Redskins via the free throw line. Garden City scored 14 points at the free throw line compared to Liberal’s three.
The Lady Buffs had 22 free throw opportunities while the Lady Redskins only took eight free throw shots in the game.
Garden City started the game strong, outscoring the Redskins 15-9 in the first quarter.
Kayla Payton hit a three in the opening period, but Garden City’s Syd Sassaman also hit a three.
The Lady Buffs were a perfect four for four form the free throw line in the first quarter.
Liberal cut the lead to 25-22 by halftime with eight points from Norah and five from Payton. Garden City only hit a three-pointer and one basket but scored five more points on free throws.
Liberal completed the comeback in the third with nine points from Norah, including a three-pointer, in the third, and four form Williams plus a bucket from Sherika Sanchez. Liberal outscored Garden 15-12 for a 37-37 tie after three.
But the fourth quarter demise led to the 51-42 loss.
Norah led all scorers with 21 points, Payton had nine, Williams scored eight, and Sanchez and Ross each scored two.
Liberal (6-2, 1-1) will return to the Big House Friday to hose Maize South.
