Errors end Cardinals season

Leader & Times

Errors doomed the Turpin Cardinals chances of advancing to the regional round of the playoffs with a 6-5 loss to the Laverne Tigers that ended their season.

“Just too many errors to overcome,” Cardinals coach Mario Mendoza said.

Three of Laverne’s six runs came directly from Turpin errors. The Cardinals committed a total of seven.

Laverne’s first inning run came after Turpin threw out a runner at third, but the ball was dropped. On the next pitch the runner scored on a passed ball.

Laverne scored three more runs in the second, and the Cardinals committed three more errors, to fall behind 4-0.

Turpin began the climb back into the game with a run in the fourth, then with two outs in the fifth, Matt Groves hit a bloop single over the shortstop that scored two runs to bring the Redbirds within one (4-3).

A run by Laverne in the bottom half of the fifth made the score 5-3.

Turpin continued to stay close with a run by Eric Bromlow in the sixth. The Cardinals tied the game in the top of the seventh when Matt Young scored.

Turpin loaded the bases with two outs, but left all three stranded. For the game, Turpin left nine on base.

Laverne’s winning run got on when a pitch hit him. He stole second, and moved to third on a passed ball. A base hit scored him ending the Cardinals season.

“Overall it was a good season,” Mendoza said. We didn’t play our best today, but we improved throughout the season and I think they had fun.

Matt Young finished the game 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. Kyler Musgrave scored two runs.

Turpin’s season ends with a 14-4 record.
