On Thursday, the Liberal High School Band Department will be performing its Spring Awards Concert in the John Maskus Auditorium Stage at 8 p.m.
The program will open with the LHS Jazzmen playing a set of jazz and funk with such tunes as Knights in the Daylight, Lullaby of Birdland and the Children of Sanchez. Multiple soloists will be featured and the Jazzmen will get the program off to a roaring start.
Following a quick intermission, the Concert Band, under the direction of Grant Mathews, will perform its State Large Group Festival Music, The Pan American March and Incantations, by Robert W. Smith. The Concert Band is comprised mostly of freshmen and sophomores and recently received a superior rating at the before mentioned festival.
Next ,the Symphonic Band, under Lance Burnett’s direction, will offer its festival music, namely the Spirit of Unity March and the Gathering of the Ranks at Hebron, by David Holsinger. The Symphonic Band also achieved superior status at the State Large Group Festival Wednesday, April 17, at Dodge City High School.
Senior awards will be presented, the year-end video will be shown and the combined number, Drum’s A Plenty, will be played by the combined bands.
The Thursday night concert is free and the general public is cordially invited to attend.
