The Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs battled Scott City to close games on the diamond, but could not get enough runs late, losing 12-9 and 13-11.
“We made too many errors that cost us runs,” Lady Mustangs manager JR Mendoza said. “ Both pitchers pitched well enough to win; yet we didn’t get the timely hits needed, or make the clutch plays necessary for a close game. As a young team there is still a lot to learn.”
In Game 1, Heights fell behind 7-1 after just two innings. The Lady Mustangs battled back with 5 in the fourth, but still trailed 9-6.
Scott City added another three in the fifth, and led 12-7 after five innings.
Heights managed to rally two runs across in the seventh, but fell by three runs.
Diana Carrillo finished the game 2-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Erick Nevarrez was also 2-4 with two doubles and RBI and a run scored. Lexi Stark was 2-3 with a walk, 2 runs scored, and an RBI.
Rachel Amerin pitched all six innings for the Lady Mustangs, giving up 10 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8.
Game 2 started out as a slugfest with 21 runs scored in the first three innings.
Heights fell behind 7-5 after two innings, but a 6-run third inning put the Lady Mustangs up 11-7. Scott City scored three in the bottom of the third, leaving Heights with a one-run lead.
But that was all the offense Heights would get, going scoreless in the final four at bats. Scott City scored three in the fifth to take the lead, and held on for the win.
Nevarrez was 3-4 with a double and two runs scored. Sara Eakes was 2-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Viancy Jimenez had a 2 RBI single and scored a run. Diana Carrillo was 2-2 with 2 walks, a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
Lexi Stark pitched all six innings giving up 13 hits and 6 walks, with one strike out.
