A Garden City man died late Sunday afternoon when the powered parachute he was flying crashed into another similar aircraft 14 miles north of Sublette.
Wilhelm F. Enns, 24, was flying a 1997 Buckeye Aviation powered parachute with passenger Herman Banman Nuefeld, 29, Sublette, when Enns started circling another powered parachute, according to a report by the Kansas Highway Patrol. The other powered aircraft was being piloted by John Dyck, 23, of Garden City. He also had a passenger on board, John Peters, 24, also of Garden City.
While Enns was circling Dyck’s aircraft, according to the report, he collided with it and both aircraft fell to the ground.
The crash killed Enns, and Nuefeld was life-flighted to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita for treatment of his injuries. Both men in the other aircraft were uninjured in the crash, according to the KHP.
The report noted that Enns’ family members were present at the time of the accident.
