Of the numerous scandals emanating from the administration of President Barack Obama, the alleged targeting of Tea Party groups, conservative organizations and gun-rights associations by the Internal Revenue Service appears to outrage a majority of Americans across the political spectrum, an expert on the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment told the Law Enforcement Examiner on Sunday.
“The IRS scandal (proves that) you can’t trust government,” said gun rights expert and police advisor John M. Snyder.
“In this case,” he added, “officials used their authority for political purposes against certain individuals and organizations. According to reports, there are separate attempts in Washington to try to get to the bottom of the situation,” said Snyder a former editor for National Rifle Association publications.
The IRS has morphed from a service-oriented agency into a law-enforcement agency that’s abused citizens with impunity.
Snyder believes that the underlying message the IRS scandal is that government abuse of its power against citizens is always a very real possibility.
“The truth is that government is a potential enemy of the people,” laments Snyder, who serves on the advisory board of the National Association of Chiefs of Police, and as the vice president of public relations for the American Federation of Police and Concerned Citizens.
Snyder tells the Law Enforcement Examiner that in order to “maintain the people’s freedom, the power of government must be circumscribed, as our Founding Fathers intended.”
“Most rational citizens probably would agree that today government in the United States is too extensive and intrusive and should be severely curtailed,” he claims.
“The people,” he said, “must be superior to government.”
Snyder, and other supporters of original intent of the U.S. Constitution, believe Americans need firearms “in order to be dominant in the country. It truly is positive that 100 million Americans own 300 million rifles, shotguns and handguns. People purchase over 10 million new firearms each year.”
His observation is based on the words of arguably history’s most brilliant patriot, Thomas Jefferson, who said, “When government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”
“The fanatic cries for more and more gun control really are nonsensical, even hysterical,” Snyder said. “Many current restrictions on firearms acquisition should be eliminated.”
“As the current IRS controversy demonstrates, government restricts and undermines liberty. God, guns and guts make Americans free,” said Snyder.
Jim Kouri, CPP, the fifth Vice President and Public Information Officer of the National Association of Chiefs of Police, has served on the National Drug Task Force and trained police and security officers throughout the country.
