After a weekend tournament that depleted the pitching staffs of the 19-and-under Liberal Bulldogs and Hugoton, an offensive frenzy led to a 9-8 loss for Liberal Tuesday at the Liberal Baseball Complex.
Brandon Terrazas pitched in his first outing on the mound. He gave up a run in the second and the third, but the Bulldogs matched Hugoton by scoring runs in the second and the third to tie the game, 2-2.
Hugoton took a 5-2 lead with three runs in the fifth, and the Bulldogs responded with two in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 5-4.
Liberal took the lead in the sixth with three runs for a 6-5 advantage.
Timothy Fitzgerald took the mound in the seventh after pitching on Sunday, and Hugoton was able to push four runs across for a 9-7 lead.
Liberal only scored one run in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded when the final out was recorded in the 9-8 loss.
Lorenzo Pando led the Bulldogs with a three-for-three performance at the plate. Law Greiner had a double.
“We had good enthusiasm, we just couldn’t get the outs,” Liberal coach Eric Olmstead said.
Liberal (6-4) is scheduled to play at Hooker, Okla., today.
