ELKHART – Josephine “Jo” Carson, 90, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, in Lawrence.
She was born on Jan. 12, 1923, to Martin and Kristina Lydak Klondike in Harrisburg, Ill.
She married Roland Carson in February 1955. He preceded her in death.
She graduated from Harrisburg Township High School and later attended St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Evansville, Ind., where she earned her diploma and became a registered nurse in 1946.
She worked at the Municipal Contagious Disease Hospital in Chicago. She worked for many years as clinic nurse for Dr. E.J. McCreight. In 1975, she became Morton County’s first county health nurse and established the original Morton County Health Department. She retired in 1988.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Carson, Lawrence, Cari (Tina) Carson, Lawrence, and Monica Carson; grandchildren, Erin and James McKinney, New York City, N.Y.; son-in-law, Kelly McKinney, New York City, N.Y.; several nephews and nieces; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Karl and Frank Klondike; sister, Rosa Preradovic; and son-in-law, Clifford Griffin.
o The mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Elkhart.
Burial will follow at the Elkhart Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart.
