TURPIN-The Beaver Lady Dusters picked up a much needed win over the struggling Turpin Lady Cardinals Tuesday night 48-19.
“Coming off of last week, last week was a bad week for the Lady Dusters,” said Lady Dusters coach Casey Jones.”We got beat twice last week. You know we didn’t come over here thinking it was going to be easy, and it really wasn’t. They play a pretty good zone defense, and at times that gives us trouble.”
Beaver’s full-court press gave Turpin fits and led to easy baskets for the Lady Dusters.Turpin did not score until midway through the second quarter with Beaver already leading 19-0.
Turpin actually outscored Beaver 6-2 over the final four minutes of the half, but trailed 21-6 at the half.
“Defensively, I thought we did a good job again,” said Lady Cardinals coach Chad Fox. “Some of our scorers are really struggling with their shot right now, and when we get the ball inside we’ve got to do a better job of looking to score.”
The Lady Dusters controlled the third quarter extending their lead to 29 points, and finished the game on cruise control.
“Our word coming over here was going to be patience,” said Jones “We didn’t show very much patience early, but we got into kind of a rhythm with our press and our zone offense started clicking a little bit, I felt pretty good about that.”
Beaver’s Anna McDonald was the games leading scorer with 18 points, and Erin Becker was the catalyst for the Lady Dusters in the third when she scored 12 of her 16 points. Tristan McQuitty also added 6.
“Erin and Anna in the half-court zone offense that we were running, those two run a high-low post and they complement each other really well, passing the ball back-and-forth from high to low or low to high and both of them were able to score doing that,” said Jones “The others have contributed well, it just depends on the kind of defense we’re facing.”
Shelby Hansen led the Lady Cardinals in scoring with 7.
Beaver improves to 11-7 on the season and will play again next Tuesday against Hooker. Turpin will face Boise City, Thursday at 4 p.m., in the first round of the Texhoma Tournament.
