Relay activities start Friday evening

• Special to the Leader & Times

The Relay For Life Survivor Dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at El Rancho Exotica north of Liberal.

Survivors are encouraged to attend this event to enjoy dinner and entertainment. For those interested in attending or have transportation needs, please contact Brenda Mallory at 620-482-1128.

Please help support the American Cancer Society by participating in the Relay For Life.  The 2013 Relay For Life will be from 7 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday at Liberal’s Light Park. Organizers are encouraging everyone in the community to join them in supporting local cancer patients and survivors.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is a yearly event conducted to raise money to help support cancer patients throughout their treatments. Items such as wigs and prosthesis are purchased and given to those who need them; also gas cards are available for those who travel for treatments as well as hotel expenses paid for the survivors and their caregivers when they have reached their destinations for treatment. Donations also help fund support groups for patients and survivors.

Donation opportunities are numerous. Donations can be given online at www.relayforlife.org/sewardcoks.

Luminaria are also available to be purchased and decorated with names or pictures of cancer patients, survivors and those that have been lost to the disease. These will line the walking track that supporters will walk around throughout the night of the event.

Organizers are asking the community to bring canned goods with them to the event. The cans will be used to anchor down the luminaries throughout the evening and will be donated to charity after the event is over.

The luminaria can be purchased online as from individuals on the Relay For Life teams or from Karen Crotinger, who can be contacted at 624-8491.

Survivor registration will begin at 6 p.m. Friday. Survivors please bring a caregiver to also be recognized  at the opening ceremony.

Since seating is limited, it is suggested that lawn chairs and/or blankets be brought for extra seating.

Please join organizers and teams at 7 p.m. Friday for opening ceremonies, including survivor and caregiver recognition.

The Luminary Ceremony will begin at 10 p.m. with activities for all attendees throughout the night.

Concessions will be available at the south end of Light Park, a silent auction will be conducted, as well as team activities and fundraisers located at each team’s tent throughout the park.

The Relay will end at 7 a.m. Saturday.

For more information about donating or participation, please contact Lauren at 624-8491 or  316-644-3278.
