HUGOTON – John C. Rome, 84, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal.

He was born Sept. 24, 1925, to Nick and Pauline (Boxler) Rome in Morland.

He married Maxyne Y. Johnson April 18, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Garden City. She survives.

He attended school in Graham County until 1939 when the family moved to the rural Holcomb area, where he finished high school.

After high school, he farmed in Garden City until he enlisted in the Army and served during the Korean conflict. He returned to farming until he retired in 1982.

He was a member of the St. Helen Catholic Church of Hugoton.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW Post No. 5391, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and Graybeards.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, picking and dehydrating apples and tea parties with his grandchildren.

Other survivors include four daughters, Donna Brower and husband, John, Moscow, Linda Stearns and husband, Lenn, Peck, Lois Williams, Emporia, and Laura Luttrell and husband, Geff, Ottawa, Kan.; one brother, Tony Rome, Garden City; one sister, Patricia Ohmes, Garden City; seven grandchildren, Brian Williams, Nick Williams, Dustin Williams, Mandi Stearns, Kaitlin Stearns, Derek Stearns and Carlee Luttrell; two great-grandchildren, James Willimas and Loreali Williams; and Godchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Adolph Rome, Ed Rome, Jerry Rome, Mike Rome, Dave Rome and Pete Rome; five sisters, Mary Rome, Mary Rome, Katherine Ruman, Clara Rome and Ann Scariano; and one granddaughter, Taralyn Stearns.

o Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Helen Catholic Church in Hugoton.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Helen Catholic Church with the Rev. Pascal Klein presiding.

Burial will follow at Hugoton Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton.

Memorials are suggested to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital or VFW Post  No. 5391 in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 423 S. Main, Hugoton, KS  67951.
