I, as a taxpayer in Seward County and Liberal, do hope that none of our elected officials spend a single cent of the taxpayers’ money under the pretext of protecting the public from someone taking a weapon or gun into a public building.
They have operated on the assumption for years that a $2 or $3 sign posted showing no guns gave us protection.
It has not.
Guns or weapons have been in those buildings unbeknownst to public officials and employees.
Now that we have a new law allowing a person that has passed a back ground check, has been finger printed, has taken an 8-hour course on the state laws that tell you what you can and cannot do, have gone to the gun range to pass a proficiency test on handling your gun safely and then pass a shooting test and hit a small target and meet the standard score it takes to pass the class.
Before all that, you had to pass a back ground check to be able to purchase your gun of choice.
Suddenly, rather than following the new law that will allow a person that has a concealed permit to go into public buildings with their weapon because elected officials have done nothing to protect the public and the employees that work for the taxpayers.
To meet that requirement, you need guards and, as the articles said, metal detectors to keep weapons out (they mean guns).
Metal detectors will not keep guns or weapons out, you just carry in non-detectible weapons. Any person can go on the Internet and learn how and what to use to get around the security, and it is pretty easy to do if you want to.
It seems to me and a number of people I have talked with that our elected officials are concerned that honest, law abiding people should not be able to carry a concealed gun into public buildings.
But they had no worries before because we posted a sign.
They now need to spend millions of dollars hire guards to keep honest people out with a gun permit and gun. The state has recognized that local governments have done nothing for security, so let people protect themselves that can meet all the requirements if they want to, and they did so with the new law.
Nothing needs to be done except follow the law.
