Posting signs does not protect children from deranged killers E-mail

I’ve been reading your editorials on the new laws that have taken effect with firearms. Everything you have said is right.

I want to say some things that won’t make some people very happy, but so what.

The schools in Liberal are supposedly protected by the police department. As far as I’ve seen or heard, the high school is the only one with some protection – at times. There is a school there in Liberal that has a door to each room from the playground, a door connecting each room from the playground and a door to the hallways. How much damage could a deranged person do there before any law enforcement could arrive?

I have never seen anything in the news about law enforcement having special training to handle an incident at the schools. If a teacher is allowed to carry (a concealed gun) in a school, they will be trained in special procedures to protect the kids.

One of the schools says that if concealed carry was allowed, it would cause shootings because the gangs would try to get a trophy from their peers.

How stupid is that thinking?

I am not sure what law enforcement officers do to keep in practice at shooting their firearms, but it used to be like pulling teeth to get them out to the range. I know that there are some concealed carry members that practice two or three times a week.

There is another school district close to you that has no law enforcement available to them for 20 to 30 minutes. Look at the damage that could be caused by that (delay in help).

As you commented about what happened at Newtown, Columbine, Virginia Tech – and some that are not talked about – they were “all” firearms-free zones and look what that failed to stop.

When I was in school, back when Methuselah was alive, it seemed as though every pickup in the school parking lot had both a shotgun and a rifle in the back window, and I can’t remember there ever being a shooting incident at that school.

Hopefully, there never is an incident at any of the schools ever again, but that may be too good to be true.

Keep up the good editorials.
