Playing without the services of three major contributors, the Lady Redskins dropped the third-place game Saturday at the Colby Classic to Goodland, 46-39.

“We had a bunch of people in different positions than they were used to playing,” Liberal coach Shane Stout said. “They stepped up and did a nice job.”

Kayla Varnes connected on four three-pointers for 12 points. Kayla Payton also scored 12 points. Destiny Hall had seven, and Kirsten Ross scored six.

“Kirsten matched dup defensively against Goodland’s top scorer and held her to zero in the first half,” Stout said. “She scored eight in the second half, well below her average.”

Three players were benched for violating team policy, and still the Lady Redskins were tied with Goodland heading in to the fourth quarter.

But the Lady Redskins were outpaced 14-7 in the final period for the 46-39 loss.

“I was as proud as I have been all year,” Stout said. “They competed really well. We are not concerned about the scoreboard but doing it the right way and playing hard. We don’t talk it, we believe it. Even though the scoreboard showed us seven points behind, I was pleased with our effort. The girls left it out there on the floor Saturday.”

Liberal (8-4) will host Sunrise Christian Academy at 6 p.m. Friday. The Lady Redskins lost to Sunrise in Wichita earlier this season.

“They have a couple of six-foot girls that gave us a problem,” Stout said. “We need to have our best effort. We need to get back on track.”
