Whatever Forgan coach Brett Trippet said to his girls at halftime, it must have been good.

After trailing by 13 at the half Forgan stormed back, allowing only 12 second-half points, to win their third tournament championship of the season, 50-44 over the Laverne Lady Tigers at Buffalo.

“We tried to make them uncomfortable,” said Lady Bulldogs coach Brett Trippet. “Laverne was in a rhythm in the first half. We pressed and trapped them better in the second half, and got them out of rhythm.”

An 18-3 rally to start the second half gave the Lady Bulldogs a 37-35 lead with less than three minutes left in the third. Laverne tied the game at 37, but a 9-0 run gave the Lady Bulldogs a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.

The first half, however, was not so easy for Forgan.

Jaci McGill, who finished with a game high 26, made her first three from the left wing to knot the game at 11 at the end of the first, and her second trey opened up the second quarter and gave the Lady Bulldogs their first lead of the game.

But that lead was short-lived, as Laverne rattled off five threes in a row to take a 29-17 lead with 2:30 left in the half.

“They came out on fire, and we did not have an answer,” said Trippet.

Laverne was 11 of 15 from the field and 6 of 10 from three-point range in the first half. Forgan was only 7 of 23 from the field and a miserable 3 of 11 from the free throw line.

To make matters worse Miranda Lopez was hit with her second and third fouls right before the half, and Laverne led at the break 32-19.

But Forgan was able to answer in the second half, and with so many blowout wins, sometimes a little adversity is good.

“It was nice to be put in a situation, and be able to find a way to come back and win,” said Trippet

Offensively, McGill was the star making four from beyond the arc, and 8 of 12 from the free throw line. Kenzi Taylor was 6 of 8 from the field and totaled 14 points.

Lindsey Trippet, Kenzi Taylor, Miranda Lopez were all named to the all-tournament team, and Jaci McGill was named tournament MVP.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 17-1 over the last two years in regular season tournaments, and have won back-to-back Buffalo Tournaments. Forgan is 18-1 and will host Shattuck Tuesday.
