House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and GOP members of the Judiciary Committee on Wednesday sent a detailed letter directly to President Barack Obama, describing the contents of a July 31, 2013, report regarding the investigation into the discrepancies and contradictions between Attorney General Eric Holder’s sworn congressional testimony and his decision to sign an affidavit requesting a search warrant for the emails of James Rosen, Fox News Channel’s chief Washington correspondent.
The Holder-signed document clearly accused Rosen of having “aided and abetted” the suspect who allegedly leaked classified material. Fox News’ Rosen was named as a suspected “co-conspirator” in the search warrant. The letter lawmakers wrote to President Obama strongly suggested a “change in leadership” at the Department of Justice.
The report’s 70-pages describes how Holder during his May 15, 2013, testimony given under oath before the Judiciary Committee, he made a “deliberate effort to avoid answering for [his] questionable decisions and actions.”
In addition, the report alleges that Holder’s “testimony was an attempt to circumvent proper congressional oversight and accountability by distorting the truth about the Justice Department’s investigative techniques targeting journalists.”
“I’m certain [President] Barack Obama didn’t read anything he wasn’t already aware of,” said former police detective and intelligence officer Michael Snopes.
“I just wish that Congress would go further. They gave up on the Fast and Furious scandal and let Holder get away with his deceit. In my opinion, he’s the link between the Rosen search warrant obtained through deception and disregard for the First and Fourth Amendments regarding freedom of the press, and search and seizure,” said Snopes.
Speaking about the report and Holder’s position as the nation’s “Top Cop,” Rep. Bob Goodlatte said,” “I find the lack of leadership at the Department of Justice extremely alarming. The deceptive and misleading testimony of Attorney General Holder is unfortunately just the most recent example in a long list of scandals that have plagued the Department.”
“The report that the House Judiciary Committee released [Wednesday] details not only the dubious testimony of Attorney General Holder but also the questionable actions of the Justice Department when it comes to their dealings with members of the media. These kinds of missteps are not acceptable and I will challenge Attorney General Holder’s mismanagement of the Department of Justice at every step,” declared Goodlatte.
In an earlier probe by a House committee, Holder was found in “contempt of Congress,” during its investigation of an Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) gun-smuggling operation known as Fast and Furious.
