A dominating effort by the West offensive line opened up holes for running back Cesar Burciaga Thursday in Garden City, and the seventh grade Warriors were able to defeat Horace Good 22-16.
Burciaga scored three touchdowns in the win including a 60-yard run late in the first quarter to give the Warriors the 8-0 lead.
Burciaga added a second running touchdown from 35 yards out to extend the lead to 14-0.
Horace Good connected on a deep pass before half to cut the Warrior lead to 14-8, but it was a rare completion against the Warrior defense.
Isaiah Witherspoon intercepted a Horace Good pass early in the first quarter, and Max Valles intercepted another in the fourth.
Burciaga added a fourth-quarter score with a 20-yard touchdown run to give the Warriors a 22-8 lead, and Horace Good scored with a minute remaining in the game to cut the lead to 22-16.
Horace Good attempted an onside kick, but the Warriors recovered.
“The offensive line played great,” West coach Butch King said. “They really did a good job up front.”
West will host Dodge City Comanche at 4 p.m. Thursday for their first home game of the season.
The West eighth graders lost their season opener to Horace Good, 34-6.
