The Beaver Dusters fired an early season shot to start the 2013 season by shutting out the Stanton County Trojans, 19-0.

“I’m really proud of the way we played defense tonight,” Dusters coach Mike McVay said. “We got good pressure, and kept them from big plays all night.”

Beaver led just 6-0 at the half, but a Trojan turnover deep in their own territory to start the second half set Beaver up for their second score. Beaver added another score in the third, going up 19-0.

Turnovers played a huge role with Stanton County committing four turnovers while the Dusters had just one.

“We were pretty vanilla on offense tonight,” McVay said. “We wanted to avoid giving them something cheap, especially the way our defense was playing.”

Beaver (1-0) will host Burlington, Colorado,  who won back-to-back state titles in 2010 and 2011, Friday.

“I know they’re a good ball club, but I haven’t had a chance to see them on film or anything, but I feel real good about where we are,” McVay said. “This win tonight was a real shot in the arm. The guys are positive and excited.”
