Thelma Murphy, 96, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.
She was born Nov. 15, 1916, to James Madison and Mattie Mae (Wilburn) Howell in Coats.
She married Ray Murphy April 17, 1943, at her home. He died Jan. 17, 2001.
She graduated from the Tyrone school system, and attended Panhandle A&M in Goodwell, where she received her teaching degree.
She taught school and music in Adams and Beaver for several years.
She was a member of the Tyrone Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school, played the piano and organ, and was active in Woman’s Missionary Union.
She helped with 4-H, home extension club, school music contests and programs.
Survivors include three children, Jim Murphy and wife, Karen, Roseville, Calif., Jess Murphy and wife, Linda, Amarillo, Texas, and Anita Hayes and husband, Bob, Justin, Texas; seven grandchildren, Todd, Travis and wife, Leah, Nathan and wife, Tanna, Sarah and husband, Mitchell, Isaac, Corrie and Aaron and wife, Sarita; three great grandchildren, Elijah, Abram and Silas; one sister, Mildred Geist, Liberal; one sister-in-law, Julia Howell, Liberal; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Benjamin; and three brothers, James, Charles and Bob Howell.
• Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Tyrone Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Stone and the Rev. Wayne Fagala presiding.
Burial will follow at the Tyrone Cemetery.
