Janie Welch from the Western Kansas Community Foundation of Garden City, second from left, presents a check for $2,000 to Stepping Stone Shelter Director Pat Allsbury, second from right, Wednesday morning. The money is a grant award from the foundation, and Allsbury said the money has been specifically designated to purchase new chairs for the shelter’s dining room. “Stepping Stone Shelter serves three meals every day to both shelter residents and those who need to walk in for a free meal,” she said. “In July 2013, we broke all previous records by serving 3,120 meals. There were 2,220 meals to residents and 900 to walk ins.” So far in 2013, Stepping Stone has housed 222 adults and 27 children and served 15,892 meals.
