L&T staff report

The Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs were in Syracuse Tuesday for a volleyball quad. The Lady Mustangs finished the quad 3-0, not losing a single set.

Heights opened with a 25-9, 25-13 win over Syracuse in league play. They then dispatched of Stanton Co., 25-20, 25-23. To finish the quad, the Lady Mustangs beat Elkhart, 25-13, 25-22.

Sophomore Madison Angell led Heights with 16 kills, followed by senior Kyndra Friend with eight.

Friend led in blocks with three, and sophomore Sara Eakes led the way in aces with nine.

Despite coming into the quad short-handed, the Lady Mustangs were able to find a way to win.

“We were missing two starters tonight,” SWH coach Julie Tucker said. “So these were huge wins for us. Senior Nayelly LaPoint was out with an injury and sophomore Laynee Garst was sick.”

Because of the players that could not compete, the Lady Mustangs were forced to make multiple adjustments.

“We had to change our offense,” Tucker said. “So Dakoda Cox took on a huge responsibility running a 5-1. She really stepped up and played great. We had Samantha Hasenbank, our sophomore libero, play front row tonight, which was an adjustment for our whole team. Sara Eakes played for our setter Nayelly LaPoint, and she did a great job contributing to our setting and hitting. Everyone had to step it up to fill some voids. I’m so proud of our team effort tonight.”

Heights will be in Cimarron Tuesday for league matches with Cimarron and Meade.
