The Redskin and Lady Redskin cross country teams qualified for the state cross country meet Saturday.

The Lady Redskins finished third out of eight teams to earn the final qualifying spot.

Senior Mercy Perez led the Lady Redskins with a third-place overall finish with a time of 15:24.00, 10 seconds behind second place Carly Flake form Andover and 25 seconds behind first place Kelsi Andrews from the private Catholic high school Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

The private Catholic high school Bishop Carroll won the meet with five runners finishing in the top 11.

Following Perez for the Lady Redskins was freshman Camryn Slatten who completed the course in 16:15.00 for 17th place.

Liberal’s next three runners ran in a pack. Sophomore Kacie Matthews finished in a time of 16:47.00 for 22nd place, freshman Saw Ahmara took 23rd with a time of 16:49.00, and two seconds later freshman Yanelly Juardo completed the course in a time of 16:49.00 for 24th.

Junior Allyson Nondorff finished 36th, and junior Vanny Diadeleon finished 41st out of a total of 50 runners.

Following first place Carroll was Goddard Eisenhower in second and Liberal in third.

The Redskins earned a second place finish at the regional meet and qualified for state.

Bishop Carroll claimed the team title with a score of 28 followed by Liberal with a 71. Kapaun rounded out the state-qualifying teams with a score of 84.

Junior Obed Quintana finished third overall, finishing the 5K course in 16:34.00. Quintana narrowly missed second with Carroll’s Nick Martin who edged Quintana at the tape.

Senior Sammy Obando finished sixth overall with a time of 16:42.00

Junior Luis Medina finished 18th with a time of 17:23.00.

Two runners behind was senior Erving Altamarino who took 20th with a time of 17:35.00.

Liberal’s next two runners finished back-to-back in 24th and 25th places, starting with sophomore Emilio Tovilla with a time of 17:46.00, and freshman Edgar Moreno with a time of 17:49.00.

Sophomore Greg McClurg took 27th.

Both Liberal teams will compete in Lawrence Saturday at the Rim Rock Farm for a chance at a state championship.
