The West Warriors hosted a pair of games Thursday afternoon against the Dodge City Cardinals. The A team won a convincing 34-3 blowout, while the B team dropped a close game, 24-20.
The B team took the floor first, and the Cardinals immediately took control of the game. At the end of the first quarter, Dodge City led 12-3 following a 10-0 run to end the quarter.
The Warriors picked up the pace in the second and closed the gap to 16-10 at the half.
West started the third quarter on a 8-0 run to take an 18-16 lead, but couldn’t keep it, and the Cardinals led 22-20 at the end of the quarter.
Dodge City did not allow a point in the final quarter and held on for a 24-20 win.
When the A team took the floor, the outcome was decided almost immediately.
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead, and led 10-0 after one.
The second quarter was not any easier for the Cardinals as West scored 16 points in the quarter to take a 26-0 lead heading into halftime.
Six more points gave the Warriors a 32-0 lead.
After a foul at the end of the quarter, Dodge City’s Brianna Nguyen hit a free throw to end the 32-0 run for West.
Each team scored two points in the final quarter for the final of 34-3.
“The A team really dominated,” West coach Brandie Fowler said. “The girls are really starting to understand and execute the system. The season is young, so we still have many things to improve upon, but it’s nice for their confidence to get a win like this.”
Tania Minjarez led the A team with 14 points, 12 of which came in the first half.
Ali Lucero added eight points in the second quarter for the Warriors.
Monday the Warriors will take on Horace Good.
“Monday’s game will be a good test to see how we measure up to the rest of the league,” Fowler said.
