ELKHART – Florence Merritt, 96, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at the Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.

She was born May 5, 1917,  to Lester and Lulu (Briggs) Weaver near Lowe, in Chattanooga County.

She married Earl Oscar Merritt Jan. 1, 1937, in Independence, Kan. He preceded her in death.

She graduated high school in Elk City.

She and her mother-in-law ran Merritt’s Café, and for 25 years she was the Morton County register of deeds.

She was a member of the Republican Party, VFW Auxiliary, First Baptist Church, and served on the Morton County Museum Board.  She was also the Woman of the Year.

Survivors include one son, James E. Meritt and wife, Carol, Elkhart; one brother, Lyle Weaver, Fredonia; one sister, Esther Stephenson, Dodge City; granddaughters, Pam Baldwin and husband, Dana, Debby Williams and Eva, Barbie McCallion and husband, Dennis; and great-grandchildren, Tannan Baldwin, Garrett Baldwin and wife Tammie, Brandon Williams, Christopher Williams, Michael McCallion, Cherokee McCallion and Gerico McCallion.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold and Ivan; and one sister, Irene Lucille.

•  Funeral service will be at 10 a.m.  Wednesday at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Ed Richards presiding.

Burial will follow at the Elkhart Cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart.

Memorials are suggested to the Morton County Museum or the First Baptist Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, P.O. Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.
