The biggest fear for the Seward County Saints Friday night against Labette was that the team might be looking at the Saturday night rematch with Independence rather than the game at hand.

But those fears were put aside.

The Saints remained perfect on the season with a 92-60 win.

If Labette can claim a moral victory, it was that they held Seward to their lowest point total of the season at 92.

While the Saints took care of business, Independence did not. The Pirates lost to Seminole State 62-54 on Friday night.

Seward has shot out to a 7-0 start mostly with blowout victories.

So far Seward has averaged 110 points per game. Seward’s defense has allowed 57 points per game.

The only challenge Seward faced all season was the nail-biter against Independence last week.

The Saints saw a halftime lead evaporate when the Pirates applied an effective half court trap, creating 31 turnovers by the Saints, many of which resulted in easy transition baskets.

Independence built a nine-point second half lead before the Saints rallied behind a strong second half by Thijen Moses who scored 17 points in the final 15 minutes of play to lead the Saints back.

Despite the 7-0 start the Seward County Saints remain unranked in the NJCAA poll. Cowley County (5-0) is ranked No. 1 in the nation, and Hutchinson (7-1) is No. 17.

Seward is not listed among other receiving votes despite last year’s third place national finish and the 7-0 start.

The Lady Saints moved up from No. 17 to No. 14 in the latest poll.

NOTE — See Monday’s Leader for results of the Independence rematch.
