South had an early lead against Kenneth Henderson in a seventh grade basketball game Thursday at Apache Fieldhouse but could not hold it in a 34-30 loss.

South jumped out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter with two baskets from Mikayla Zapien and a free throw from Arely Valenzuela.

But the Lady Falcons took advantage of foul trouble in the second quarter and made three free throws and two baskets in the second quarter to outpace South at half, 9-7.

Kenneth Henderson continued to dominate in the third quarter, outscoring South 14-4 to take a 23-11 lead.

But the Lady Apaches finished strong, outscoring Kenneth Henderson 9-1 in the final quarter but coming up short, 24-20.

Zapien led the Lady Apaches with 12 points. Sabrina Pacheco added four, Erandi Castillo had two and Valenzuela had one.

The Lady Apache B-team also let a lead slip away in the second half. South had a 10-4 lead but the Lady Falcons scored 12 unanswered points to take a 16-10 lead. South hit a free throw and a basket in the final minute, but fell short, 16-13.
