For three and a half quarters, the Beaver Dusters gave the Southwestern Heights Mustangs all they could handle.

But  a late run by the Mustangs led to a 50-39 Heights win in Beaver Tuesday.

Wes Winfrey gave the Mustangs an extra horse on the herd, connecting on four of the Mustangs seven three pointers in the game.

Neither team established dominance in the first half. With turnovers and sluggish shooting, the first quarter ended in a 11-11 tie.

Beaver was able to take a 24-22 at half thanks in part to an old-fashioned three point play that gave the Dusters a 19-16 lead.

The Mustang defense started to force Duster turnovers and was able to get a slim 36-33 lead after the third quarter.

The Mustangs were able to stretch the lead to six with five minutes to play, and Beaver took a time out to try to regain composure.

But the Mustangs were able to force Duster turnovers and convert them into points. Beaver struggled to shoot down the stretch, and the Mustangs were able to get the 50-39 win.

“We did a little better at the free throw line, but there’s still room for improvement,” Heights coach Chad Novack said. “Beaver is a well-coached team.”

Winfrey led the Mustangs with 12, all three pointers, and Oscar Sigala scored 11. Cory Ryan added 10.

The Dusters were led by Samuel Becker, Cole Trippet and Jordan Estala who each scored eight.

Heights will host Holcomb at the Corral Friday in Hi-Plains League action.

Beaver will begin district play Friday against Hooker, Okla., at Texhoma.
