On Dec. 7, the Liberal High School After-Prom committee is hosting a 5K color run/walk with all of the proceeds to go to the junior-senior after-prom party.

The Jingle All The Way Color Run/Walk is a five-kilometer, untimed race in which participants are doused from head to toe in colors at each kilometer.

The fun continues at the finish line with a gigantic “finish festival” using more colored powder to create happiness and lasting memories.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 7 at the LHS football field, with the race itself beginning at 10 a.m. Lia Roberts of the After-Prom committee said the event is just a “very casual race.”

“This one is untimed,” she said. “You can walk, run, jog, whatever you want to do. We’re going to start at the high school football parking lot, and that’s where we will end up. We’re going to have a fun party type atmosphere. Hopefully, the weather’s cooperating. We’ve got music that’ll be going before and after. Everybody will meet there. You’ll be checked in. We’ll have wrist bands for them. They’ll run, and at the end, we’ll provide water and their T-shirts.”

Roberts said participants are encouraged to wear white on the day of the event.

“It’s a powder paint, and it does stain,” she said. “We ask participants to wear a white T-shirt, but with the weather, there probably going to need to layer their clothes. Be sure to wear anything you don’t mind getting stained.”

Early registration for the color run/walk will continue until Dec. 4, and registrations will continue right up till race time, but those who register does include an additional $10.

“The registration fee does include a T-shirt,” Roberts said.

Registration costs for the different groups of participants are:

• Solo runner/walker – $25 per person early registration and $35 per person on Dec. 7

• Four person color team runners and walkers – $50 early registration and $60 on Dec. 7

• Age 6-12 – $10 per person early registration and $20 per person on Dec. 7

• Age 5 and younger – $5 per person early registration and $15 per person on Dec. 7

Roberts said those who cannot participate in the color run can still contribute to After Prom through a concession stand at the Leader & Times Christmas parade, also on Dec. 7.

“We’ll be selling walking tacos, hot chocolate, baked items, bottled water and coffee,” she said.

Roberts said participants are asked to get registrations in as soon as possible, but she said having the event on Christmas parade day, a day traditionally known for colder weather, could mean some people waiting until later to register.

“There may be people just waiting to see what the weather does when it gets closer,” she said. “That’s fine. We’ll accept registrations up until the end.”

Roberts said After Prom will likely host some more fundraisers after Christmas.

“We’ve got a few ideas we’re talking about with basketball season coming,” she said. “We’re making some plans for some fundraisers to do during basketball season. We haven’t really got those ironed out yet.”

Participants have two race routes to choose from, both of which will take them through Liberal’s industrial area in the west side of town.

“We had to go through the city and get the race route determined and approved,” Roberts said. “They provided us with a map. We tried to stay off the main streets as much as possible. It’s through that industrial area on the west side of town.”
