The South eighth grade B team jumped out to an early lead in Monday afternoon’s game against the Dodge City Cardinals, but could not hold on as Dodge City came away with a 15-12 win in overtime.

The Apaches looked strong in the first quarter, getting baskets from Alizae Salinas and Princella Brown to take a 4-0 lead in the first quarter.

Neither team could get thing going on the offensive end in the second as South outscored the Cardinals 2-1 in the quarter to take a 6-1 lead into the half.

Brandy Gomez scored the only two points of the quarter for the Apaches.

Dodge City came out determined in the second half, keeping the South offense in check and scoreless in the third quarter. The Cardinals scored four points in the third to cut the South lead to 6-5.

Not long into the final quarter, Dodge City had grabbed the lead, and looked like they might steal the win in the final minutes.

Salinas hit 1-of-2 free throws late to tie the game at 7-7.

Down two in the final minute of play, Gomez got a layup to make it 9-9, and send the game to overtime.

The Cardinals gained control early in the extra period, and kept it to come away with the 15-12 win.

The Apaches were 8-of-12 from the charity stripe in the game.
