The South Apaches eighth grade A team exploded in the second and third quarters Monday evening to pull away from the Dodge City Cardinals, and earn a 23-10 win.

“Last night’s win was a good one for us,” South coach Kristen Dolen said. “It was a great way to go into Thanksgiving break.”

Patty Alfaro led South with seven points in the game, scoring all seven in the second and third quarters. Three of those points came from the charity stripe in the second.

“Patty Alfaro made some key free throws for us in the victory,” Dolen said.

Both teams got off to a slow start, struggling to find an offensive rhythm. After the first quarter the Apaches trailed the Cardinals 2-1.

That was the only time in the game that South trailed.

Once the second quarter began, it was a whole new ball game.

South came out strong, completely shutting down Dodge City at every turn. The Apaches defensive effort kept the Cardinals scoreless in the quarter, and by the end of the half, Dodge City coach Chris Chilton was visibly frustrated.

Chilton received a technical foul late in the half for arguing a foul against one of his players. His team was called for ten fouls in the first half.

Meanwhile, South went on a scoring binge in the second, outscoring the Cardinal 9-0 in the quarter, and led 10-2 at halftime.

Four different Apaches scored in the second quarter.

Coming out of the locker room in the second half, South continued to apply pressure on defense, and attack the basket on the offensive end.

Alondra Alvarado hit three-of-four from the free throw line in the the third quarter, while Audris Lujan chipped in with four points. Lujan finished the game with six points.

“Audris Lujan did a really good job offensively and defensively last night,” Dolen said. “She struggled in the first quarter but really cleaned it up by making some layups and getting some good steals on defense.”

Alfaro also added four more points in the third quarter.

The Apaches outscored Dodge City 11-3 in the third to extend the lead to 21-5 heading into the final quarter.

With the comfortable lead, South seemed to be in cruise control in the fourth. Evelyn Rios scored the only two points in the quarter for the Apaches, while the Cardinals doubled their scoring total for the 23-10 final.

“The girls have been working really hard,” Dolen said. “And we always stress how now that we are starting to play teams for the second time, we need to be showing improvement from the first time we played those teams.”
