Whitney Hay and Ash-Leigh Antrim lit up the score board Monday evening, combining for 26 points in West’s seventh grade A team game versus the Dodge City Cardinals. The Warriors dominated from beginning to end, cruising to a 33-15 win Monday evening.

Hay had a game-high 14 points, while Antrim scored 12 points of her own.

West jumped out ahead in the first quarter, taking a 6-0 lead early. The Cardinals defense could not stop Antrim and Hay, as the duo scored all 10 of the Warriors first quarter points, and West had a 10-3 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Warriors continued to apply pressure in the second and extend their lead. Hay had six in the quarter to give her 10 points in the half, and Kaylee Adams added two points as well.

Emma Shellenberger chipped in with a free throw in the second. As a team, West was 1-of-6 in the first half from the free throw line. Nevertheless, the Warriors had a 19-5 lead heading into halftime.

Dodge City came out of the half determined to cut into West’s sizeable lead.

Despite scoring eight points in the third quarter, the Cardinals still struggled to stop the relentless Warrior attack. Hay and Antrim both scored four points a piece in the third, while Kimberley Alarcon had two of her own.

West once again outscored Dodge City in the third, and the Warriors had pushed their lead to 16 at the end of the third, with the score 29-13.

With a comfortable lead, and the game seemingly out of reach, West gave their hard-working starters a well-earned rest and went to the bench in the final quarter.

Even with the change, the Cardinals could not find a way to put points on the board, and the Warrior defense continued to dominate.

West’s defense gave up only two points in the fourth quarter, while the Warriors put up four points for the final score of 33-15.

Adams, Alarcon and Maria Williams each scored two points in the game, and Shellenberger finished with one point.

The only weak spot for West came from the free throw line, where the Warriors finished 1-of-8 as a team in the game.

The West seventh graders will be in action at home again on Thursday, when they take on Kenneth Henderson.
