BEAVER — Carter Nash exploded for 20 points and Derek Portillo 18 — 12 in the first half — to pace the Guymon Tigers to a 53-43 win over Beaver on Tuesaday night at the Duster Dome.
Guymon (1-0) found itself trailing much of the first half as Beaver’s Garrett Weber was unstoppable most of the first half. Weber scored 11 of his 14 points in the first two quarters of the game, leading the Dusters to as much as a 9-point advantage in the second quarter.
But the Tigers countered with Portillo, who kept Guymon close in the first quarter with all six of Guymon’s first quarter points as the Tigers trailed 10-6.
Beaver went on a quick run in the second quarter, going up 17-8 behind Gunhar Martin, Jorge Rivera and Fernando Castillo.
Guymon pulled to within three by halftime as Portillo and Nash got back in gear, with Nash scoring the last four points of the half for the Tigers, who trailed 21-18.
Guymon outscored the Dusters 15-10 in the third quarter, and it was mostly Nash. After Portillo and Kerrick Ray kept Guymon down by one, Nash hit a basket to tie it at 24, Angel Vega out the Tigers ahead, and Nash hit a trey to put the Tigers up by five. Castillo cut it to three for Beaver, and Vega put Guymon ehad by five again.
Andrew Jesko cut it two and Castillo tied it before Nash put the Tigers up 33-31 at the end of the third.
Weber tied it for Beaver and a turnover by the Tigers led to a Hadley Skaggs basket for a 35-33 Beaver lead.
It’s the last time the Duster would have the advantage.
Bradyn Hawkins put the Tigers uo 36-35, and Vega and Nash put the Tigers up five.
Rivera was a beast in the paint, bringing the Dusters to within two with somke string points in the paint and a couple free throws as the Tigers went on a cold snap.
Portillo broke the Tigers out of it with a hoop for a 44-41 lead as Guymon ended the game on a 10-2 flurry to win it.
In addition to Nash with 20 and Portillo with 18, Vega added 7, Hawkins 3, Jovan Ochoa 2.
Weber led Beaver with 14, Rivera 12, Castillo 6, Skaggs 6, Martin 2 and Jesko 2.
