HUGOTON — The Hooker Lady Bulldogs used speed and quick thinking to overcome their size disadvantage against the Ulysses Lady Tigers, and get a 61-53 win Thursday night in an opening round game of the Red and Blue Classic in Hugoton.
Ulysses had control of the boards for the majority of the night, and continued to get second chance shots.
Struggling to get going early, the Lady Bulldogs were in a funk, and found themselves down 15-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Hooker came out strong in the second, and dominated the Lady Tigers throughout the period, outscoring Ulysses 18-6 in the quarter to take a 29-21 lead at the half.
Kyra Cathcart led the Lady Bulldogs through the first half, scoring 15 of her teams 29 points.
The beginning of the second half was much like the second quarter, with Hooker extending their lead to double-digits early in the half.
The Lady Bulldogs were constantly breaking the Ulysses full-court press to run out ahead of the Lady Tigers defense. Hooker’s aggressive attack against the press resulted in many fast break points and trips to the free throw line all night.
By the end of the third, the Lady Bulldogs had pushed the lead to 12, at 44-32.
Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the final quarter, with Ulysses having the edge, outscoring Hooker 21-17 in the fourth. But in the end it wasn’t enough as the Lady Bulldogs had pulled out the 61-53 win.
The Lady Bulldogs advance to take on the Perryton Lady Rangers at 3 p.m. today in the second round of the Red and Blue Classic.
