The Turpin Lady Cardinals got their first win of the season with a 34-30 victory over the Booker, Texas Lady Kiowas on the last day of the Laverne Invitational, thanks, in part to a halftime adjustment.

"I really think the key to the game was we were in a 2-3 zone and switched to a 3-2 zone and that really gave them problems," Lady Cardinals coach Jeff Funk said. "When we were in a 2-3 they (Booker) were patient enough to move the ball around until they got good shots from around the free throw line extended. They didn't have any inside game. Our switch made it much tougher for them to get those shots."

Turpin trailed after three quarters 23-21, but the success at the defensive end with the switch to the 3-2 was carrying over to the offensive end. After scoring just 10 points in the first half, Turpin scored 11 in the third and 13 in the fourth.

"We really started to run our short corner offense better," Funk said. "We did a better job of passing so we could get the ball into our post players and get better shots.

It also got the Lady Cardinals to the free throw line, but Turpin made just 12 of 32 at the charity stripe.

With the game knotted at 25, Turpin went on a 6-0 to go up 31-25 then held on for the four-point win.

"The girls were excited," Funk said. "It was big for them to get that win, especially in a tournament."

Ashley Funk led the Lady Cardinals with 13 points, including six in the fourth quarter. Hanna Weber added 7, and Alyssa Kinser scored 5.

Turpin will host Texhoma Tuesday.
