Despite the homecourt advantage, the Hugoton Eagles could not overcome the Ulysses Tigers in the finals of the Blue and Red Classic Saturday night, falling 61-58.
Hugoton had four players score in double figures, but a stellar performance from Ulysses’ Tregg Rodriguez, who scored a game high 24 points, carried the Tigers to the title.
The Eagles started the game strong, scoring 15 points in the opening quarter to grab an early lead, 15-8.
Ulysses persevered and came back to cut the lead to two at the half with Hugoton up 26-24.
The Tigers went back-and-forth with the Eagles throughout the third, and managed to take a one point lead heading into the fourth quarter, leading 42-41.
The final quarter saw more of the same, with the two teams evenly matched and neither having a clear advantage over the other. In the end, Ulysses had won the fourth quarter 19-17, and the game 61-58 to earn the title.
Jeison Rodriguez led the Eagles with 16 points, and was named to the All-Tournament team. Logan Frederick scored 12 point, Reid Davis had 11 and Parker Titus chipped in with 10.
